February 6, 2012

The one-day workshop entitled Sensors and serious games for balance training in elderly @Home will be organized by INCAS3 in Assen on Monday, February 6. During the workshop, ideas will be developed in a number of different sessions for game concepts for balance training, in-game balance assessment and sensor systems for balance assessment. These ideas will provide direction to the PhD project of Mike van Diest and possible Master projects.

If you are interested in attending the workshop, please contact Marion Pot, +31 (0)592 860 000.

Program
Moderator: Heinrich Wörtche

09:30 Welcome and introduction, Klaas Postema
09:35 Deterioration in balance in the elderly, Klaas Postema
09:50 Training aspects for balance training and balance analysis: state of art, Claudine Lamoth
10:05 The SPRINT approach, aim and organization of the mind mapping sessions, Mike van Diest

10:15 Coffee

10:30-12:15 Session 1: Medical Technology Assessment (Bart Verkerke)
Under the guidance of Bart Verkerke, we will define a number of demands that will be placed on the training system and then use ballot boxes to assess how those persons present prioritize the importance of the demands. The aim of the session is to define important demands which we can use to give direction to mind mapping sessions 2 and 3 whilst gaining insight and understanding into one another’s assessment of the importance of certain demands.
Deliverable 1: Important demands on the system to be developed and insight into how the various partners prioritize these demands

12:15-13:15 Lunch

13:15-15:00 Session 2: Balance training & analysis and serious games (Klaas Postema)
Introduction by Teun van der Laan: Serious gaming: state of art. The second session focuses on embedding relevant training aspects in serious games and how balance can subsequently be assessed during training. The aim of this session is to note a number of concrete game concepts and ideas for in-game balance assessment. Views are given here by movement sciences and elderly medicine, together with the user requirements and technology.
Deliverable 2: Game concept for balance training for the elderly in a home setting
Deliverable 3: Concrete ideas for in-game balance assessment

15:00 Coffee

15:15-16:45 Session 3: Front End Sensor for serious games (Heinrich Wörtche)
Introduction by Jan Stegenga: sensors for game control, balance assessment and training. In session 2, a number of concrete ideas will have been noted for suitable game concepts and in-game balance assessment. In this third session, mind mapping will be carried out regarding sensor systems for balance analysis and controlling of the serious games. The session will be technologically oriented, but user requirements will also be included here. The aim of the session is to gain ideas for sensor systems that are required for game control and balance assessment and, what is more, that fit in with the requirements and prospects of the target group.
Deliverable 4: Definition of sensor systems that are required for game control and balance assessment

16:45 Wrap-up with results workshop: Jan Stegenga
16:55 Concluding remarks: Bart Verkerke, Heinrich Wörtche

17:00 Drinks
