Environmental Camps and Maker Faires – INCAS³ on the road

by

Arjen Bogerman, Hedde Bosman, Erik Kallen and Georges Meinders

Abstract:
The talk will be about the overseas activities of INCAS³ specifically the environmental camp in Canada, the Maker Faire weekend in San Francisco and the sensor expo in Chicago.

Environment camp:
The environment camp was an event that represented the first result of a collaboration between INCAS³, The university of Saskatchewan and the Northwest Nations Education Council (NNEC). The goal of the camp was to motivate a selection of the best native Canadian high school students to keep excelling in education. This was achieved by providing the students with a week-long program combining camping, environmental science lab courses on water quality testing and teachings by a medicine man about native American culture, religion, history and plant medicine. The role of INCAS³ on the camp in Canada was to provide the sensors, the knowledge and scientific methods to do sensor readings and gathering data.

Maker Faire:
The Maker Faire is an event where inventors, cooks, engineers and artists (so called “makers”) get the opportunity to present their newest creations to a huge audience. The engineers at INCAS³ got the opportunity to show off their total immersion remote controlled car creation at the Maker Faire in California San Francisco.

Chicago:
Sensors Expo & Conference Chicago is the only industry event in North America exclusively focused on Sensors and Sensor Integrated Systems, providing over 20 years of technical innovation & thought leadership

The latest sensing solutions, evaluation of emerging standards, finding and comparing suppliers, and solving new design challenges made Sensors Expo & Conference worth attending to.

About the Speakers:
Arjen Bogerman is an Electronics Engineer at INCAS³ since February 1st 2010. In this period he worked on projects like the Dacom Soil Moisture Probe and the Medusa Multi Channel Particle Energy Spectrum Analyzer. He has a main background in hardware designs for a night vision manufacturer with specialties in the high-voltage area.

Hedde Bosman is a computer science master student who already entered a pre doctoral research trajectory. His master thesis subject is about the possibility of relating head-movement to sounds, and currently he is also involved in the Dacom project.

Erik Kallen graduated at the Hanzehogeschool in Groningen for technical computer science and joined INCAS³ in 2009 as an engineer. Working on the software side of sensor nodes such as mesh networking, low power optimization and visualizing sensor data.

Georges Meinders is an electronics design engineer and he was the first engineer to join INCAS³ in 2009. One of his first tasks was to set up the temporary initial engineering lab which is currently being used to develop new technology at INCAS³. He’s currently working on the realization of a proof-of-concept of the popular wireless sensor network concept “Smart Dust”. This will soon be followed by the design of prototype wireless sensor network nodes. These nodes will form the basis of an implementation of the INCAS³ cognitive sensor network concept which will provide scientists with a unique high-tech tool to perform their experiments on.
