Jan Erik van Deijnen is responsible for the research line ‘Environmental Awareness’. This group is working on sensor applications for monitoring environmental processes. The application’s areas are the control of water quality and sensor networks in buildings.

Prior to joining INCAS³, Jan Erik was a staff member at the Hanze Institute of Technology (HIT) where he lectured biology. He linked his academic interest and experience in animal sensor systems and his environmental expertise with applied sensor system development.

During the 1990s, Jan Erik worked as an environmental consultant for the Province of Groningen at IWACO (Consultants for Water and Environment). His specialization was soil contamination for which he established a geographic information system.

Jan Erik earned his master’s degree in Biology from Radboud University Nijmegen. His doctoral work focused on animal physiology, specifically on the endocrinology of invertebrates. After earning his Ph.D., also from Radboud University Nijmegen, he worked as a researcher at Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris and the University Hospital in Groningen.
