Particle and gamma-ray spectroscopy in nuclear physics research

During his seminar Deniz will focus on radiation detectors and dedicated high performance signal processing. He will motivate this technology developments by measurements geared to detect very specific features in the structure of atomic nuclei. Deniz will especially emphasis research on the so-called Pigmy Dipole Resonance, which is a phenomena only recently observed in nuclei with a neutron number significantly exceeding the number of protons. The excess neutrons are considered to form an outer neutron skin. Oscillations of the inner nuclear core versus the outer skin are called Pigmy resonances and allow conclusions on the structure of neutron stars but also on a very strange phenomena, specific for nuclear systems: a radial dependency of the symmetry of the nuclear Hamilton operator, i.e. the fundamental rules governing physics in a nucleus are becoming radial dependent.
